Summer Blog Challenge: Day 49

Today's Challenge: If you could be President for a day, what one law would you change?

If I were in charge for a day, what I would change is a program, not a law. The government gives subsidies to farmers who grow corn. This program was designed to help farmers survive when the price of corn drops.  The program has unintentionally created a system that rewards farmers for growing corn, even when the market is saturated with too much corn, even when growing a single crop year after year has destroyed the soil and more and more chemicals and fertilizer are required each year. I would change this program to help farmers who use organic, sustainable practices and produce a variety of crops. Prices for organic foods would go down to a more reasonable level and the soil would be healthier and more fertile. I would include an educational program to be sure more farmers could transition into this type of farming, too.

  1. What an excellent idea! Could you imagine how many more people would eat organic food if it were more affordable? Living in a rural area that is filled with cornfields, alfalfa, oats, and soybeans, it sure would be nice to see more sustainable practices that help the earth rather than deplete it.

  2. I've often thought that farm subsidies need to be reviewed. What I hate is that the big farmers have eaten up the little farmers.
