N is for Novel

I've always wanted to be a writer, or at least for as long as I can remember. I have been published by a few small literary magazines, but than was back in college. What I really want is to write a great novel. Not just any novel, but a really great novel that people would remember. I started once. I was very happy with how it was coming. About a hundred or so pages into it, my computer crashed. I had no backup. It was gone. All gone. I tried several times to start over but it was too frustrating. So I gave up completely. Lately, however, I've been thinking about starting again with a new story and leaving that one. Maybe I just need to start fresh. Maybe one day I will finish a novel, just not that novel. And maybe one day I will get back to that one after all.

  1. This story breaks my heart. I know what it's like to have a computer failure and no back up. It happened to me recently and man was I cursing myself for not saving on my memory stick! I don't blame you for being frustrated, but if this story stuck with you, I think you should give it another try. Or at least write down the main ideas, then you could always come back to it.

    Have fun with a-z.

  2. What a nightmare losing your work. I worry about that too. I always save mine to a flash drive. And then I copy the files off periodically to my hard drive just in case the flash drive was corrupted.

I hope you go back to writing sometime. I'm relatively new to writing novels (been doing it a few years, and I love it. There is a huge learning curve, but now I'm more confident about the whole process. Even though I am not agented yet.

But starting something new might motivate you to get back to your old one too. Go for your dreams.

    1. I agree that starting fresh may be a better bet for now...That's smart to back up your back up!

  3. Losing all that work is a nightmare and I know how gutting it must have been. I'm sorry you lost it.

I think if you want to write though, you should sit down and start, because that feeling isn't going to go away. There are places online you can back your work up to as well. Good luck with it!
