FOOD WASTE

The amount of food wasted in America is a pet peeve of mine. Around home we try to make sure food stays out of the trash. If we don't eat it, the dogs or the chickens will! We also make a habit of picking up the slightly imperfect items in the produce department because if they sit too long they will end up in the dumpster out back.

While watching TV a few nights ago, my husband and I saw America's problem with wasted food spelled out in a way that anyone can understand. Watch this clip to learn more about how terrible the situation really is and get a few laughs too.

BRAINSTORMING FOR FREEBIES

I'm starting a new retail sales website and I'm struggling with a name. It should be unique, not already in use, and should have something to do with being from "The South." (Because you know that's a place, not a direction!)

I'm hoping for some helpful suggestions. There are so many names that have already been used that it's proving difficult for me to think of one that is unique enough to still be available. So...

I thought we might have a brainstorming session on Mama Making Changes!

Please comment below with any suggestions. If I choose a name that was suggested in the comments on this post, then I will send a $10 gift certificate to the reader who made the suggestion as soon as the new site is up and running!

I HEART SWAGBUCKS

I recently clicked on a twitter link for Swagbucks, just out of curiosity. It turns out Swagbucks.com is a website that allow you to earn points (swagbucks) which can be exchanged for gift cards. The selection of gift cards is tremendous and the tasks are very simple.

For example, I now use their search engine to search the web. I get swagbucks for that! I answer a one question poll each morning. I get swagbucks for that! I sign up for free offers. I get swagbucks for that too! And when I want to order something online, I go to Swagbucks.com first, click on their shopping section, and then click on the site I want to shop. They give me swagbucks for my purchases!

I am loving this site!

To try it yourself, just click here to go to Swagbucks.com and sign up! Signing up is super fast if you use your Facebook account, or you can take a few extra seconds and sign up with your email address.

Let me know what you think! Do you heart swagbucks too?

A is for Action

It's Day One of the 2014 A to Z Blogging Challenge and I'm so excited to be participating again this year! Look for a new post every day in April except Sundays. Click on the A to Z Challenge button in the right sidebar to see a list of all participating blogs and see what others are writing for the challenge.

A is for Action...

I believe it's very important to take action when we perceive a problem. Too many folks think one person can't change anything, but if every one of those people acted instead of just thinking about the problem, that would act up to big changes! And often the actions of one person can create more impact than you'd think.

My daughter and I discovered a few years ago that the Humane Society in my hometown was often over capacity, which leads to animals being euthanized. The county has no pound, so all of the animals that Animal Control picks up are dropped off at the Humane Society. All of the animals that people find lost or abandoned are dropped off there as well. They also accept owner surrendered pets. Overwhelmed by the sheer number of dogs coming in, they developed a network of fosters to take animals until they can be placed with a rescue group or adopted and save them from being put to sleep. We knew we wanted to help.

We've fostered many dogs in the last few years and all of them have had happy endings except one puppy who came into the shelter with a deadly illness and didn't make it. We've had short-term fosters who have already been claimed by rescue groups but haven't transported yet, and we've had longer term fosters who needed a little socialization and extra help to make them more adoptable. It's so gratifying to see a puppy come running, tail wagging, when you call her...the same puppy that was so afraid of people at first that she didn't want to come out of her crate or be touched. That terrified puppy didn't have much chance of getting adopted, but the new cheerful version does!

Currently, we are fostering two dogs, Holly and Percy. To see more info about them, other pets in need, or the foster group that I work with visit www.helpdarlingtonpets.com or darlingtonhumane.org

What actions have you taken to support a cause about which you feel strongly? Comment below to share your story.

CALIFORNIA TO VOTE ON GMO LABELING

Posted at the request of Moms Across America. This post is copied from their email and Mama Making Changes does not claim authorship.

Dear Friends,
Our entire movement needs your help!
The Dali Lama said "Western Women will change the world."
That is us and the time is now. And men, we cannot do this without your support!

California is the 7th largest economy in the world.
WHEN California passes GMO labeling it will be a HUGE win for our entire movement!

Don't live in California?
WE NEED EVERYONE to help!
If you do not live in CA you can send this to all your friends and family in CA, post on FB for CA friends.
You can also email national organizations or groups like Autism support groups, cancer groups etc and ask them to endorse
Californians for GE Labeling at http://www.caforgefoodlabeling.org/endorsement_main_page

Californians, can you go to this link, http://www.caforgefoodlabeling.org/take_action

Click on "Find Your Rep" and CALL them today?
Regarding GMO food labeling, ask them to :

1. Co Author
2. Endorse it
3. Vote for it

The Hearing for the vote on this bill in the committee is March 26th.
Deadline to contact your legislator for endorsements is March 27th.

If there are ANY Moms who can be at the Capitol hearing on Wednesday, the coalition is ASKING FOR MOMS to be present.
If we could have hundreds of Moms there, it would pass! 1400 Tenth St., Sacramento, CA, 95814
Rally North Capitol Steps (L St & 11th St) 11:30 - 1:00 pm - just before Hearing.
*HEARING –  1:30 pm - 4:30 pm   HEALTH COMMITTEE HEARING ROOM 4203

Here is an example for an email to your rep:
Dear Diane,
Thank you for all you do!!
I am writing to you to ask you to PLEASE co author, endorse and vote for the CA GE food labeling bill SB1381 which is going into going to be heard in the health committee at the Capitol next Wed, March 26, 2014.
Moms Across America ask for immediate GMO labeling so we can best care for our families. There is growing evidence of harm to our children's health when they ingest GMOs and we see our kids get better from allergies, autism, asthma and auto immune issues when they do avoid GMOs in their diet.
Will you co author and support this bill?
Signed,

Thankvember: Days Eight through Ten

The Vagabond Studio

As part of the Thankvember Blog Hop, hosted by The Vagabond Studio and Chantilly Songs, I have pledged to post something for which I am thankful each day this month.

Day Eight: I am thankful for my furry friends. My two kitties and my daughter's little yorkie (who is snuggled up beside me in my chair as I type this) bring me some much joy. Their unconditional love and eagerness to please far outweigh any work that is required to take care of them.

Day Nine: I am thankful that God has seen fit to remove poisonous relationships from my life and give me the peaceful and happy life that is now mine. Change can be frightening, but a wise friend once told me, "If you want to make God laugh, tell him you have a plan." God's plan for my life is so much bigger than any I can make myself!

Day Ten: I'm thankful for my sisters. I have five of them and I know that if I need anything at all, whether it's someone to talk to or a big favor, that I can call a sister and any one of them will gladly be there for me. My sisters are more than just family...they are my best friends!

What can you name that you are thankful for today?

Feel free to share your thoughts and the things for which you are thankful in the comments at the bottom of this post. Or click on the Thankvember 2013 tab at the top of the page to see a list of days that are actually links and will take you to the post for that day. Come back daily to be reminded of the many things we often take for granted or view them one after another in a single day. This is a blog hop! Each of the blogs below is participating and I would love it if my readers would visit some or all of them to see their Thankvember posts and show them a little love!

Thankvember: Days Six and Seven

The Vagabond Studio

As part of the Thankvember Blog Hop, hosted by The Vagabond Studio and Chantilly Songs, I have pledged to post something for which I am thankful each day this month. I missed yesterday so today I am listing two things for which I am thankful.

Day Six: I am thankful for my sister-in-law and her family who found us after an absence of nearly thirty years. They are loving and supportive and are so happy to be a part of our family and we are so happy to have them in our lives.

Day Seven: I am thankful for being able to take my daughter to see some of her favorite country music artists tonight and for the people (see day six!) who made it happen. She is so excited and it gives me so much joy to see.

What can you name that you are thankful for today?

Feel free to share your thoughts and the things for which you are thankful in the comments at the bottom of this post. Thankvember: Days One Through Five

The Vagabond Studio

As part of the Thankvember Blog Hop, hosted by The Vagabond Studio and Chantilly Songs, I have pledged to post something for which I am thankful each day this month. I am a little late getting started, so today I am sharing four things instead of one.
  1. I am so thankful for my beautiful children. They don't always do what I expect and they aren't perfect, but I wouldn't trade them for anything in the world. I love them more than anything on earth and would do anything for them.
  2. I am thankful for my daughter's new school, where the other kids and the teachers have made her feel right at home.
  3. I am thankful for the animal shelters and rescue groups in my area that work so hard to save every last animal that comes in. Last year one of our local shelters took in over 5000 dogs and, even though they are not a no-kill shelter, surprisingly few had to be euthanized. This is because the volunteers and staff there work so hard to place these animals in temporary or permanent homes or with rescue groups in order to make more space daily.
  4. I am thankful that my employer closed the doors and put me out of work! My new job is more relaxed, more flexible, and more appreciative of my efforts. I truly believe that God closes doors in our lives so that he can open better ones to us!
  5. I am thankful for my blogging mentor, Shai at The Vagabond Studio. While I don't ask for her help and guidance as much as I did in the past, Mama Making Changes would never have been a success without her help. I still read her blog and her Facebook posts and am inspired by her daily, even when we don't actually talk. The work she is doing in Peace Studies now just makes her more of an inspiration. Make sure you visit her at www.thevagabondstudio.com.

Monday A La Mode: October 21, 2013

I hand pick the news, products, websites and more that I believe will interest MMC readers most and compile it all into one easy to read weekly post.

Go to work on Monday morning with something to talk about!

Subscribe to this blog by email in the right sidebar and you'll receive each new post in your inbox.

This week on Monday A La Mode...

What Not to Eat...

You've probably seen the "Dirty Dozen" list of fruits and veggies you should avoid unless organicly grown. But I found a new list this week that's very interesting! Click here to read what eight different experts said was the one food they would never eat, compliments of EatLocalGrown.com

Speaking of That...

If you haven't visited EatLocalGrown.com before, click here to go to their home page, where you can find out where to buy locally grown food in your area, share with others where you get your locally grown food, and more. It's a pretty fantastic project that works better and better the more people participate.

Back Up...

Just in case you haven't seen the "Dirty Dozen" list I mentioned above, it is an annually updated list from the Environmental Working Group of the 12 foods that retain the highest amounts of dangerous chemical pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers. Even if you can't always grow your own or buy organic, avoid these items unless organically grown!

  1. Apples
  2. Celery
  3. Cherry Tomatoes
  4. Cucumbers
  5. Hot Peppers
  6. Grapes
  7. Imported Nectarines
  8. Peaches
  9. Potatoes
  10. Spinach
  11. Strawberries
  12. Sweet Bell Peppers
Click here to visit the Environmental Working Group website where you can download the Dirty Dozen as well as the Clean Fifteen or learn how to get them on your phone or tablet. You can also sign up for their email tips, make a donation, or see the results of all of the foods they tested.

Earlier this month I promised more info about Breast Cancer Awareness. I found a great site to share with you! I hope you learn lots and have as much fun as I did with their site. They are doing a great job for a great cause...

See the bottom of this post for a great set of directions that will tell you how to feel your boobies properly, also from feelyourboobies.com!

  • Be aware of the common symptoms of breast cancer and never hesitate to seek a professional opinion if you are concerned. Early treatment carries a far higher success rate! Possible symptons include:
  1. Unexplained redness of the breast.
  2. Pain or itching of the breast.
  3. Breast swelling or enlargement.
  4. Thickening of the breast's skin and ridged or dimpled skin.
  5. Swolen lymph nodes in the armpit or just above or below your collarbone.
That's it for this week's Monday A La Mode. Now, ladies, go feel yourself properly!
