Summer Blog Challenge: Day 38

Today's Challenge: Post song lyrics that mean something to you.

I am a huge Michael Jackson fan, but this song takes the cake. It's less known because it was released not long before he died. The lyrics are amazing and really touching. These words say so much about what I believe and how I feel. When I listen to this song or even just read the lyrics I feel this sense of angst, a tugging in my heart, and I want to DO SOMETHING!

What about sunrise? What about rain? What about all the thingsThat you said we were to gain?
What about killing fields? Is there a time? What about all the thingsThat you said was yours and mine?
Did you ever stop to noticeAll the blood we've shared before?Did you ever stop to noticeThe crying earth, the weeping shores?
What have we done to the world?Look what we've done. What about all the peaceThat you pledged your only son?
What about flowering fields? Is there a time? What about all the dreamsThat you said was yours and mine?
Did you ever stop to noticeAll the blood we've shared before?Did you ever stop to noticeThis crying earth, this weeping shore?

Raw Milk vs Pasteurized Milk

My family has switched to raw milk recently. There are several reasons for our switch, including our desire to support local farmers and the increased nutritional value. I found this chart today and I found it very interesting so I wanted to share. he attached article is a little scary, linking all sorts of problems like developmental disorders and learning problems to soy milk and formula. My daughter was born with a severe milk allergy and was "failing to thrive" on breast milk (probably because she couldn't hold it down for more than a few minutes). She would probably have died in a time before soy milk and soy formula so I have mixed emotions about this information and the use of soy formula. However, I will say that she has difficulty with memory and some learning issues. Something to think about...

What do you think about this information? Do you buy raw milk for your family? If you aren't sure where to find raw milk locally, search for local farms on www.localharvest.org and even contact them via email to find out what they offer and how to buy from them.

Summer Blog Challenge: Day 37

Today's Challenge: What is something you would attempt if you knew you couldn't fail?

Ooh I know! I know! Pick me! Oh yeah...I'm the only one here...heehee...

Going Green with the Grizls
For so long now I have wanted to open my own business. I have had some great ideas, including a fine consignment shop for teens and young adults, a pet daycare, a green grocer, and a green home building and decorating firm (my husband was until recently and most of his family still are in construction). The pet daycare is already taken in our town now, although I think mine would be better, but I would enjoy any of these businesses. Having my own business would make home-schooling easier and give me more flexibility in the hours I work. I would especially love it if my husband and I could run a business together and both leave our regular jobs. I have a ton of bookkeeping experience and I am such the people-person, while he is the hard working quiet type. I think we could accomplish amazing things working together!

What would you do if you knew you couldn't fail?

Summer Blog Challenge: Day 36

Today's Challenge: Talk about a holiday tradition you have in your family.

My mom's side of my family used to get together for every holiday on the calendar, but the family get growing and many people had extended families to visit, children to celebrate with at home, and some (like us) moved away to other parts of the state or even country. It got increasingly difficult to have everyone together until we began only getting together for major holidays...Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. The problem with the new plan was that these holidays were close together and nobody saw each other from Easter to Thanksgiving.

Finally, someone came up with the excellent idea of having two family holidays each year...July 4 and Christmas...so that we would see each at least every 6 months. It worked beautifully and has been a tradition for about 7 or 8 years now! We have a warm weather holiday where we cook-out and swim and spend the day relaxing in the hammock or by the pool. Then we have a cold weather holiday where everyone brings warm, heavy food and gathers into one house and laughs and recalls years gone by while watching the youngest generation try to entertain themselves.

Unfortunately, my hubbie and kids and I are missing the July 4 get-together this year because it's tomorrow and I could not get out of working. My oldest is in Missouri and can't come home for it. And my hubbie (who thought he was working until today anyway) and the younger ones can't go and leave me because we only have one car. This is the first time we have ever missed it and there is a general pouty mood in the house tonight, knowing that we can't be there. I guess we will have to find time to go up and visit soon since most of the family lives in the same area, and next year I will put in my time-off request way early!

My Aunt Beth always takes lots of pictures and labels them. Then she puts them out on the table the next year for us to look through and take some. Here are some pics of previous July 4 family-get-togethers. The picture of my beautiful "Grandma P." is from 2005. The pic of my oldest son, Alistair, is from 2006 (He had just gotten his lip pierced so he was playing with it in the picture). The picture of my husband and I is from 2007 and it is still one of my favorite photos of the two of us.

What holiday traditions does your family have? I always love to hear your stories, so please share!

Summer Blog Challenge: Day 35

Today's Challenge: Talk about a fear you have.

Okay, you asked for it. Ready for a good laugh? I have more than one fear, of course, but this is the one that you will find most interesting. But I am setting myself up here. Oh my. Here it is.

Photo from freedigitalphotos.net
Since I was a child and for as long as I can remember, I have had an absolutely unexplainable, nonsense-ical,  totally irrational fear...of flushing a toilet in the dark! It isn't the toilet I am afraid of, but the sound it makes when it flushes. This doesn't bother me at all during the daytime, but at night...I flush and run! I run to my bed and jump onto it as quickly as possible!

I know you are laughing so hard right now that tears are coming to your eyes. Or maybe so hard you have to pee? Hahaha. I don't blame you! Anyone want to offer up some Freudian explanation for my freaky fear? I'd love to hear your interpretation on this one!

Do you have an unusual fear? What is it?
