Cake Conundrum

Last year my sister-in-law made my daughter's birthday cake from scratch. It was super delicious and moist and it looked oh so designer!

Well, that was the last birthday cake in our home and now I have my husband's birthday, my younger son's birthday, mine, and then my daughter's again, all coming up this summer. My sister-in-law and I don't really talk much anymore (that's a story best saved for another day) and I am not much of a baker. Anyone have any super simple cake recipes or decorating ideas that I can use this summer?

  1. My super simple solution is Betty Crocker premade cake mix. Just add oil, water and a bunch of eggs. Not glamourous but always predictable. Maybe Google some recipes and try them out before hand. I'd be willing to come over and taste test for you. All the best in your cooking endeavours.

  2. That cake is so cute! I always just make cupcakes and arrange them in a cute way, it is a lot easier than trying to perfect a cake. Pinterest has a lot of good ideas but I am just not patient. :P

  3. My neighbor is really into cake decorating. She's helped me do a lot of cakes this past year. I learned a lot just watching her! Using a simple star shaped tip you can do a lot of things with shaped cakes. Here is a cake she did for my neighbors birthday. It was inspired by this fabric she had, it's gorgeous! http://eightdaysaweekmom.blogspot.com/2012/01/let-them-eat-cake.html

  5. I used to do all of the cake making/decorating in the family, but that was LONG ago when I had... what's it called again?.... oh yeah... TIME! Ha! I've since learned that taste is more important than presentation. My favorite is this heavenly chocolate orange cake from Fat Free Vegan: http://blog.fatfreevegan.com/2007/12/chocolate-orange-cake.html

It's absolutely delicious, super easy, and healthy! It's also easy to make it look nice and pretty with some chocolate drizzles and orange slices.

  7. It is a great cake, but my son loves a dirt cake with gummy worms on top and made in a flower pot instead of a cake pan. Actually you can make any kind of cake in a flower pot, then top with crushed Oreos and gummy worms. It's really cute.

  8. Looks great! My son's birthday is coming up and we're just doing cupcakes with plain white frosting from the bakery. I'm making cute cupcake picks to go in them though! Good Luck!
